My Place Update
Friday, August 7th, 2009Seven eps in the can and six to go. The score has been an interesting shift through the decades beginning with 18oo’s chamber music (the series is shot in reverse order to the screening order) through ragtime, celtic (in reference to a featured Irish family. Greek music is featured in the next block) then on to 1970’s experimental synth ala Kraftwerk, Silver Apples, Harry Partch through to current day contemporary.
It is certainly a challenge as every episode is an entity unto itself with very little material available to reference between each of them. Unlike most series television, where you set up the basic palette for the score from which most of the music throughout is derived, “My Place” is like a series of vaguely related short films and each is approached in it’s own unique manner. Each episode has a completely different cast from the previous one - save for a couple of characters who age at ten year intervals and has been a casting juggernaut with 80 odd leads and supports.
The score has been recorded at both Collywood and Sandcastle Studios in Sydney and provided a wonderful excuse to purchase more stringed instruments……
